Why they're called freedom papersBefore emancipation, a free Black man or woman in America carried papers — a document proving status, issued and re-registered, produced on demand. Without the papers, freedom could be denied by anyone who asked. The paper wasn't the freedom. It was the proof of it.
This is that idea, turned into something a household can actually do. Nobody hands these papers out. You earn each one by doing a specific, ordinary, difficult thing — and when it's done, you print the proof. Six papers, in order, because each one makes the next one possible.
